He has finished off the podium just once, ironically at his home race in Nurburgring, Germany. He has taken pole position eleven times and stood on the top step of the podium nine times and looks to smash an old record of Schumi's with five races to go.
He now stands a single point away from a second straight title that would make him the youngest double world champion of all time. The precocious German can only lose the title to Button by failing to score in all the remaining five races, which Button has to win.
He has adopted an 'It ain't over till it's over' attitude, which is good because complacency is almost always detrimental, as CSK, who haven't been knocked out of a tournament since the distant 2009 IPL in SA, found out the hard way. He will need to finish anywhere above tenth position in Suzuka to enter a small group of double World Champions, which shouldn't be too difficult outside of a crash situation.
October 9 will see the Japanese Grand Prix, which is a favourite with its curving track that crosses itself. Vettel could opt for the red supersoft tyres which are very helpful for sharp corners but have a low life. The youthful German and his team have got the best out of the unfamiliar new Pirellis.
In three weeks we will witness the first Indian Grand Prix on the outskirts af the national capital and the promotional events have captured the imagination of race fans in the country already. The World Championship will probably be decided by then but that will not take anything away from the excitement of watching the loud sleek cars zoom past right here in India.
